BARNARDSVILLE – Virginia M. Saunders, age 97 of Barnardsville, passed away at her home on Thursday, February 26, 2026.

Mrs. Saunders was born November 21, 1928, in San Fernando, CA, and traveled the world, visiting 30 different countries, learning their craft and culture. This was instrumental as she published many works of art and taught craft classes at the North Carolina Arboretum. She was a part of the North Carolina Gourd Society and has also been featured in television appearances with craft demonstrations at major venues with the Professional Craftsman. Virginia was a daughter of Arthur T. and Geneva Smith Miles and was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Miles.

Surviving is her husband of 45 years, Richard N. Saunders; children, Kathleen Nix, Kerry Potter, and Kelly Potter; stepchildren, Michael, Gary, and Bruce Saunders, Sally and Sherrie Wetter; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family would like donations in her memory to be sent to The Salvation Army, 750 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
