WEAVERVILLE – Mattie Sue Champion DeCaro, age 93, of Weaverville passed away on Monday, August 24, 2026. She was the daughter of the late Gordon Lamar and Lottie Payne Roby and was also preceded in death by her first husband, Boyd Champion; daughter, Suzanne “Tootie” Taylor; second husband, Peter DeCaro; and brothers, Johnny Roby, Charles Roby, Frankie Roby, Larry Roby, and Jerry Roby.

Mrs. DeCaro was born on December 11, 1932, in Sallis, MS and attended nursing school. She raised her children in Pensacola, FL and later moved to Columbia, SC where she ran a daycare. After her second husband’s passing, she moved to Weaverville for 27 years. She was an assistant preschool teacher at Weaverville United Methodist Church for several years. Sue cherished spending time with her family, and nothing brought her greater joy than being present with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who lovingly called her Nanny.

Surviving are her sons, Robert Champion (Jacqueline), James Champion (Miriam), and William “Pete” Champion (Beth); grandchildren, Scott Champion (Sarah), Traci Jones (Judson), Kristen Champion Klein (James), Lauren Champion Gaessner (Bjoern), Morgan Champion (Jackie Reimann), and Natalie Champion Doyle (Ryan) who stayed by her side in her last days; and great grandchildren, Aubrey Champion, Wilder and Oaks Jones, Camryn and Gray Klein, and Caroline and Grayson Doyle.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date. West Family Funeral Services is honored to be serving the Champion family during this time.
