Shelby Jean Garrison Shields

Shelby Jean Garrison Shields, age 86, of Weaverville passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 30, 2023, surrounded by family.

She was born September 27, 1937, in Buncombe County to the late Ewell and Bessie Banks Garrison.

Shelby was a 1955 graduate of North Buncombe High School and still kept up with her local classmates.  Throughout her life, Shelby was involved in many local clubs and groups while also holding leadership positions in some.  She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, was a volunteer and chairperson of the Dry Ridge Historical Museum in Weaverville, a volunteer and historian of the Old Weaverville Cemetery, and was still an active member and former treasurer of the Weaverville Music Study Club.  From young adulthood, Shelby joined the Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority and continued to stay an active member for over four decades.  Before beginning a long career at the Town of Weaverville as Town Clerk and Zoning Administrator, Shelby was co-owner of the WMMH Radio station in Marshall, NC.  After retirement, Shelby grew very passionate about genealogy.  She spent years tracing her ancestors and sharing that history with her family.  Shelby loved to garden and be outdoors.  She also had a life-long enjoyment of traveling with her family and friends.

Preceding Shelby in death was her late husband A. Dean Shields, infant daughter Gina Lynne Cole, sister Doris Hamlin and niece Virginia Moss.

Surviving children are Susan Redmond (Kirk), Greg Cole, Joel Cole and Ken Shields (Denise); nine grandchildren, Morgan Metcalf (Darrell), Reagan Edwards (Seth), Brittany Ervin (Clint), Kristen Silver (Shawn), Seth Redmond (Danielle), Whitney Ramsey (Kyle), Jerrod Redmond, Stephanie Shields, Wiley Cole; and eighteen great grandchildren; Davis, Holden, Lawson, Dagen, Abigail, Merritt, Kasen,  Miles, Kylen, Sadie, Finley, Everette, Corliss, Harper, Penelope, Brooks, Boone, and Ellie; and nieces, Donna Hamlin and Vicky Hendrix.
