Rowena S. Sprouse

ASHEVILLE – Rowena S. Sprouse, age 76, of Asheville, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family.  Rowena was born on September 7, 1947, in Buncombe County. She was the daughter of the late Horace Silvers and Grace McIntosh Silvers. She was also preceded in death by her stepdaughter, Tracy Edwards; and her great-grandson, Justin Kelvin Miller.

Rowena grew up in Yancey County and lived much of her life in Buncombe County. She was a beautician for more than 40 years, and she was a member of Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church in Alexander.  Rowena was a kindhearted and loving person.  She always put others before herself.  Many people will miss her dearly.

She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Walter Ray Sprouse; her great-grandson, Darren Deshaun, whom she and husband Walter were raising; her son, Matthew Morrow; her daughter, Kristal Thomas and grandchildren, Kirstie Lee Thomas, Brooke Ellen Thomas, Gracie Rebecca Clark; great-grandchildren, Xavier, Addison, Isabella, Cadence, Omega, Sebastian, and Malakai; her step-children, Shannon Sprouse and Daniel Sprouse, Sheila Sprouse and Tabitha Myers; her sisters, Virginia Ray (Jimmy), Mary Jane Boyd, Johnnie Hassen (Danny) and Julia Silvers; her brother, Gary Silvers (Sue); and many nieces and nephews.

Rowena’s funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 1, 2023 at Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church at 339 Flint Hill Road in Alexander. The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church prior to the service. Reverend Larry Sprouse and Reverend Hayes Carver will officiate. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery.
