WEAVERVILLE – Robert Guy Hughes, 86, of Weaverville, passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at the CarePartners Hospice Solace Center.

Mr. Hughes was born in Mitchell County on March 24, 1936, to the late Robert Caswell and Myrtle Tipton Hughes.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Glen Campbell, Max Anglin and Charlie Richards; niece, Sabrina Richards; and his nephew, Jeff Hughes.

Guy was a graduate of Tipton Hill High School Class of 1954. Soon after graduation, he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Suffrage AFB near Detroit, Michigan during the Korean War.  After his service, he attended ETSU. He transferred and graduated from Steed College of Technology. Guy later enjoyed his work in aircraft design and was honored to have worked for McDonnell at Cape Canaveral, Lockheed-Martin, Boeing, Grumman and Stencil Aero. As Guy and Marilyn began to grow their family, he worked for many years for the postal service in the evenings and enjoyed home building in the mornings before going into work.  Guy later retired from the post office and then officially began his home building career as a building contractor where he, Marilyn, and Patrick built forty-eight homes locally. Guy was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Weaverville and was admired for his strong work ethic, integrity, and fairness. He valued and cherished his family, neighbors, and dear classmates from Tipton Hill.

Guy is survived by his wife, Marilyn Wilson Hughes; three sons, Samuel Hughes, Robert E. Hughes and wife Sharon; and Patrick Hughes, all of Weaverville; two grandsons, Robert Nolen Hughes and Andrew Guy Hughes; brother, J.D. Hughes and his wife Mary of Mars Hill; and many nieces and nephews.
