Maurice "Buck" Buckner, a dedicated individual whose life spanned nearly nine decades, was born on April 23, 1936, in Yancey County, North Carolina. He departed this world on Saturday, January 24, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, commitment, and cherished memories.
Buck's early career began with Montgomery Ward and later extended to Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore, Maryland. His journey took a significant turn when he relocated to Weaverville, North Carolina, where he continued to serve the community through his roles with the Weaverville Police Department and subsequently the Buncombe County Sheriff's Department. His commitment to law enforcement and public safety exemplified a life dedicated to the well-being of others. Additionally, Buck was a proud veteran of the United States Army, a testament to his unwavering dedication to his country.
He was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Lena Taylor Buckner, his beloved wife, Julia "Kathy" Buckner to whom he was married 47 years, and his daughter, Gina Christie.
Buck is survived by his son, Maurice Lee Buckner and his daughter, Carley Neal Banks and her children, Connor and Millie Kate; granddaughter, Alex Turcot and her husband Bill and their children, Mason, Ava, Jake and Logan; grandson, Kevin Cameron and wife Shannon and their children, Haile, Paslei and Kinlei and also grandson, Mike Cameron. Also surviving is special friend of 16 years, Betty Jean Sandidge of Tennessee.
A graveside service to honor Buck will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 2:30 PM at the Little Ivy Baptist Church Cemetery in Mars Hill, North Carolina. This gathering will serve as a heartfelt farewell to a man who touched the lives of many and stood as a pillar of strength for his family and community. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
