ASHEVILLE – Katherine Ann Hoflinger Ackert, at the age of 92, passed away on Sunday, August 2nd in Weaverville, NC.

Mrs. Ackert was born on July 26, 1934, in New York City. From a young age she rode the subway alone and flourished with independence as a latchkey kid. She loved New York City. She grew up speaking German until WWII, and her New York German accent never left her. Katherine spent her teenage years in Germantown, New York, where she met and married Phillip. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in July 2025. She spent 25 years abroad, where she lived in Venezuela, Colombia, and Nigeria. After Phil retired, they lived full-time in Key Biscayne, Florida. They later lived in Half Moon Bay, California for 20 years. They traveled the world together. Throughout her life Katherine loved to sew, knit, play bridge, travel, read, and cook. She loved fashion, celebrity gossip, and music. She loved wine and cats. Katherine volunteered at Mercy Hospital in Miami for many years. She also volunteered to knit lap blankets for veterans. Katherine was brave, adventurous, independent, intelligent, and stubborn. Up until the end, she did things her way. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Susanna Harnisch Hoflinger and wife of the late Phillip Eugene Ackert who passed away earlier this year. She is also preceded in death by son, Shawn Ackert.

Surviving is her daughter, Melissa Anne Ackert (Mark); son, Shannon Phillip Ackert (Michelle); and her grandchildren.
