John Paul Johnson

WEAVERVILLE – John Paul Johnson, 79, passed away on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at his home in Weaverville.

John was born on December 4, 1944, in Omaha, Nebraska. He was the son of the late Dorothy M. and John Johnson. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Diane Rodriguez; and his niece, Angela Dolezal.

John received his undergraduate degree from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. He then attended the University of Nebraska for his law degree. He was drafted while in law school and served in Vietnam with the Big Red One. He then finished his law degree at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.   He moved to the Washington, DC area to work for the Bureau of Veterans Affairs before accepting a position of Administrative Law Judge for the Social Security administration and assignment in Des Moines, Iowa where he spent the remainder of his federal career. John was also an avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Suzanne Smiley Johnson; his daughter, Jennifer Anne Williams and her husband Eric; his son, James Thomas Johnson and his wife, Lisa; his sister, Sharon Morrissey; grandchildren, Michael Johnson and his wife Jamie, Elizabeth Grove and her husband Chase, Jonathan White and his wife Brittany, James Sullivan and Jesse Washington; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be planned for a future date at Arlington National Cemetery.
