Jerry Allen Sluder, 81, grew bored with retirement, and on October 27, 2026, answered the Lord’s call for an antique appraiser. Knowing Jerry, Heaven may never have a better auctioneer.
Jerry was born on June 28, 1945, in Asheville, North Carolina, to the late Joe B. and Kathleen Bradburn Sluder. He was a proud 1963 graduate of North Buncombe High School.
Jerry’s quick wit, unmistakable sense of humor, and charming personality caught the eye of Patricia Davis, and the two were married on June 27, 1964. What followed was 61 years of marriage, a lifetime of memories, and a love that stood the test of time. Patricia was not only his devoted wife but also his caregiver, closest companion, and best friend.
Jerry was a proud father to his two sons, Chris Sluder (Brandy) and Kevin Sluder (Pam). His family continued to grow, he was “Big Papa” to Corbin and Brennen Sluder, Polina Sluder, Anton Sluder, Mela Sluder, Marissa Broadway, and Alexis Hancock; “Great Big Poppy” to Adalynn and Emberlynn; and “Grand Jerry” to Josh Rice and Morgan Bass. Whatever name they called him, each held a special place in his heart.
Jerry is also survived by his sister, Jolene Luther, and his three brothers, David, Doug, and Danny Sluder (Kristie), all of Weaverville.
Jerry believed in hard work, taking care of his family, and making the most of every opportunity. He spent 26 years as a truck driver and was a proud member of Teamsters Local 61. In 1981, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Sluder Fuel Oil, Inc., building a business rooted in determination, hard work, and service to his community.
But Jerry’s true passion was waiting to be discovered. A visit to an auction sparked what would become his life’s calling. In 1986, he founded Jerry Sluder Auctions, Inc., turning his love of antiques, collectibles, and the excitement of an auction into a successful and respected career that spanned more than 30 years.
Jerry had a remarkable eye for finding treasures, a gift for connecting with people, and a personality that could bring life to any auction. For him, it was never simply about buying and selling antiques. It was about the people he met, the friendships he made, the stories behind the treasures, and the enjoyment he found in doing something he truly loved.
A lifelong baseball enthusiast, Jerry enjoyed spending time on the ballfield and served for several years as a youth league coach. He was a devoted Los Angeles Dodgers fan and a loyal supporter of the North Carolina Tar Heels. Whether watching a game, coaching young players, or discussing his favorite teams, his love of sports was always part of who he was.
Above all, Jerry was a man of deep faith in God, strong integrity, devotion to his family, and a genuine love for people. He had a way of making others laugh, a story for nearly every occasion, and a presence that will be difficult to replace. He worked hard, loved deeply, and lived life with a spirit that was uniquely his own.
While his family and friends will dearly miss his laughter, wisdom, and unforgettable personality, they take comfort in knowing that Jerry’s work here is finished, and perhaps Heaven has already found its newest auctioneer.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm on Saturday, October 31, 2026, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home with Doug Sluder officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m. on Saturday prior to the funeral.
