Obituary

WEAVERVILLE - Jerry Louis Burnette, age 84, of 11 Webster Street, Weaverville passed away Wednesday, November 4th, 2026. Jerry was born May 31, 1942, in Buncombe County to the late Donald Luther Burnette and Virginia Wilson Burnette. Jerry was preceded in death by the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Janet Lee Burnette in 2016.

Jerry lived a full life in Buncombe County and was a faithful member of Weaverville United Methodist Church. He was proud to be a longtime member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Twice voted “Friendliest” by his peers at North Buncombe High School, he kept the spirit of that superlative throughout his life. Jerry always found the best qualities in everyone he met. He was proud to be a long-time member of the Asheville Elks Lodge #608, where he cherished good times with his lifelong friends. There he served alongside his wife, Janet, as a compassionate leader of the annual lodge holiday shoe party, benefiting local children.

Jerry was the proud father of two daughters, Joan and Jeryl. Jerry loved his family deeply, often reminding everyone “it isn't bragging on your grandkids if it’s true”! Jerry is survived by his daughters, Joan Burnette Goode (Lane), and Jeryl Burnette Sloan (Steve); and his grandchildren, Rachel Goode, Dillon Goode, Daniel Goode, Wren Sloan, Grace Sloan, and Luke Sloan.

A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, November 11th at Weaverville United Methodist Church; visitation at 1pm, service at 2pm. Family will receive friends afterwards at the home of Jeryl and Steve Sloan. Arrangements by West Funeral Home, Weaverville, NC. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Jerry to Asheville Elks Lodge #608, designated for the annual holiday shoe party.
