ALEXANDER – Jennie Parris Sluder, age 101, of Alexander, went to be with the Lord, Friday, April 30, 2021.
Mrs. Sluder was born October 24, 1919 in Buncombe County to the late James Ervin and Cordelia “Delia” Haney Parris; she was a resident of Buncombe County all of her life.
For 33 years, Jennie spent five days a week in the tall red-brick building known as the French Broad Elementary School in Alexander; the first 10 years, she was a student and graduated. After her children started school she went back to work and the last 23 years, she was the school secretary. She was a charter member and oldest member of Alexander Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Charlie W. Sluder who died in 1995; sisters, Edith and Gladys Parris, Lillian Redmon, and Ora Sluder; brothers, Clayton, Glenn, Dennis and Tony Parris.
Surviving are her daughter, Regina Sluder (Regina’s family would like to thank her for so lovingly taking care of Jennie); son, Van W. Sluder and wife Pat, and Ronald “Tweed” Sluder and wife Marie; four grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
A private family service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2021 in Alexander Missionary Baptist Church, Alexander. Reverends Gerald Sprinkle and Randy Sluder will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
For those who wish to pay their respects, Mrs. Sluder will be available for viewing between 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Monday, May 3, 2021 at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. The family will not be present.
Serving as pallbearers are, Jason Ponder, Nathan Rogers, Shane Sluder, James Fehr, J.E. Sluder, Wayne Parris, and Brodie Rogers.
Per the NC Governor, masks are required inside the building.
