James Carlos Rice

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James “Jim” Carlos Rice, who peacefully departed this life at the age of 95 on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at his home in Asheville. He was born on April 18, 1930, to the late Carroll James Rice and Mary Jenkins Rice.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a hardworking, humble man with a deep-rooted faith in Jesus. He never met a stranger and his warm smile, quick wit and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He was often remembered as saying “If you have friends and food, that’s all that matters in life.”

He was a loving husband to his present wife, Polly, for over 38 years. He is survived by his children, son, Rick of Donalds, SC; daughter, Rita (& husband Tom) of Huntersville, NC; stepdaughters, Lisa (& husband Mark) of Pelzer, SC, and Patricia of Weaverville, NC; 8 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren whom he adored and loved dearly.

Jim will be missed greatly by his family and friends, but they are comforted knowing he is now with the Lord. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his first wife of 27 years, Estie W. Rice; daughter, Patricia R. Bates; granddaughter, Brittney Danielle Rice; sister, Edna Bullard; brothers, Chuck Wiggins, Clyde, Earl, Ed, Max and Wayne Rice.

The graveside service will take place at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at Sheppard Cemetery located at 26 McCurry Road in Weaverville, North Carolina with Reverend Dale Whitson officiating. For those who wish to view, the casket will be open 30 minutes prior to the service at graveside.
