Grethel Davis Rickman

SWANNANOA - Grethel Davis Rickman, a beloved soul whose warmth and kindness touched all who knew her, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026, at Swannanoa Valley Health and Rehab. Born on November 12, 1934, in Buncombe County, Grethel lived a rich and full life spanning over ninety-one remarkable years.

Known for her welcoming spirit and ability to make friends wherever she went, Grethel truly never met a stranger. Her engaging personality allowed her to connect deeply with people from all walks of life, sharing both conversation and laughter with ease. Those who knew her often remembered her fondness for playing the piano, a hobby she loved dearly, and her joyous singing of old-time gospel songs that filled hearts with comfort and hope.

Grethel’s journey was marked by a steadfast dedication to family. She was a cherished wife to the late Clyde Waldo Rickman, with whom she shared a loving sixty years of marriage. Though she now rests from her earthly travels, the legacy of their bond lives on through the generations. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin Walter and Misha Jane Haynes Davis, whose memory she held close.

Her family was the center of her life, and she leaves behind a loving circle of daughters Noma Cordell of Swannanoa, Jan Rickman of Swannanoa, and Grethel Jane Rickman of Asheville. She also warmly embraced Elke Colon of Maryland, her daughter-in-law, and Beatrisha "Phoenix" Porter, her bonus daughter. Grethel’s presence will be profoundly missed by her many nieces and nephews who will cherish fond memories of her kindness and generosity.

Grethel was predeceased by several beloved family members, including her son Marvin Rickman, her devoted sister Etta Powers, along with sisters Novella Pegg, Vonnie Bell, and Ann Thompson. She also mourned the loss of brothers Tug Davis, Wallace Davis, and Rollins Davis, as well as her son-in-law Robert Cordell.

The family will gather to honor Grethel’s life with a graveside service on Friday, June 12, 2026, at Sky View Memorial Park, located at 25 Skyview Park Dr., Asheville, NC 28805. The service will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will provide an opportunity for family and friends to celebrate the remarkable woman who touched so many lives.

Grethel Davis Rickman leaves behind memories scented with the sweetness of her music and melodies, the comfort of her words, and the light of her compassionate heart. Her spirit continues to inspire, reminding us all of the power of kindness and the grace found in genuine connection. Though she has departed, her legacy of love and warmth will forever remain in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
