WEAVERVILLE – Gil Calderwood, age 75, of Weaverville passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. He is deeply missed by his spouse of 45 years, Joe, their dog Peanut, and the many people whose lives he touched.
Gil was born on October 29, 1950, in Tupelo, Mississippi, where he spent his first eighteen years before the world opened up to him. He made his way through Houston, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Titusville, Merida Mexico, and eventually settling in the mountains of Weaverville NC, where they put down roots eighteen years ago and never looked back. Miami is where he embarked on a career as a flight attendant with National Airlines and then Pan American World Airways that carried him across oceans and into the skies.
Gil was a man who built things. Together with Joe, he worked with Joe in his CPA firm, an IT brokerage, and a Wholesale Plant Nursery. His most lasting mark on the landscape was Starview Heights, a 62-home development they brought to life in the hills above Weaverville—the same community where he and Joe made their home.
He was a beloved son of the late Glenn and Lucy Farrar. He is survived by his spouse, Joe Calderwood; his brothers, Glenn Farrar and Thomas Eddie Farrar; and his dog, Chloe, known to everyone as Peanut.
A gathering celebrating his life will be held at the Starview Clubhouse. This will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the organizations Gil volunteered for and believed in: WNCAP of Asheville, or the Asheville Humane Society.
West Family Funeral Services is honored to be serving Gil’s family.
