Fred W. Smith

WEAVERVILLE – Fred W. Smith, a resident of Buncombe County, North Carolina, passed away on April 17, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on October 28, 1944, in Madison County, North Carolina, Fred’s life was marked by dedication, warmth, and a lively spirit that touched all who knew him.

Fred proudly served his country in the United States Navy, demonstrating honor and commitment in his service. Following his military career, he devoted many years to working with the Arizona Chemical Company in Florida, from which he retired before embarking on a second retirement from N.O.A.H. in Asheville. These chapters of his professional life revealed a man of steadfast work ethic and community involvement.

A longtime resident of Panama City, Florida, Fred lived there for a number of years before returning to the mountains of North Carolina in 1999, where he found comfort and peace among familiar surroundings. He was known for his jovial nature and was often described as a jokester, delighting friends and family with his humor and light-heartedness. Fred found joy in playing the piano, a pastime that brought music and happiness into his home and heart.

Fred is remembered by his beloved wife of 29 years, Faith Trinidad Smith; his daughter, Summer Odom; and his stepchildren, Malani Whitsitt and Edward Whitsitt, and several grandchildren who carry forward his memory with love and respect. His life also leaves a lasting imprint through the memories of his late son, Lionel Smith, and his parents, Beverly and Sadie Ramsey Smith, who preceded him in death.

A memorial service to honor Fred’s life will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 2:30 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, located at 17 Merrimon Ave, Weaverville, NC 28787. Family, friends, and all who knew Fred are invited to gather and celebrate his remarkable journey, sharing stories and remembrance of a man who brought laughter, music, and steadfast love to those around him.
