Obituary

Master Sergeant Edgar Willis Banks, Retired, aged 96, of Weaverville, journeyed peacefully to be with the Lord on August 17, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born in Buncombe County on July 4, 1930, Edgar devoted his life to his family, community, and country. His distinguished 20-year career in the U.S. Air Force culminated in the rank of Master Sergeant. Following his military service, he worked for Suburban Propane until his retirement in 1990. A man of deep faith, Edgar was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, Weaverville. He enjoyed gardening, fixing anything, and square dancing.

He was the beloved son of the late Willis and Bonnie Allen Banks and the devoted husband of the late Irene Taffer Banks, to whom he was married for nearly 70 years. Edgar was preceded in death by his sisters, Wilma Killian, Sue Bradley, and Linda Shatzer; brothers Williard, Floyd, and Troy Banks; and his son-in-law, Laymon Guthrie.

Edgar leaves behind a legacy of love through his family: daughters Beverly Guthrie, and Kimberly Plemmons (Mark); sons, Douglas Banks (Mary), and Mark Banks (Donna); brothers, Ralph and A.D. Banks; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his spirit and values.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at First Baptist Church Weaverville, 63 N. Main St., Weaverville, with Reverend Dr. Stuart Lamkin and Reverend Dr. Jim McCoy officiating. He will be laid to rest with honor at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, Asheville.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m., preceding the service, at the church.

West Family Funeral Services is privileged to serve the Banks family during this time of remembrance.
