WEAVERVILLE– Dorothy Clark Young, age 88, died Monday, November 6, 2017 in Prescott Valley, Arizona surrounded by love and compassionate care, while visiting her son. Mrs. Young was born October 13, 1929 in Bessemer City, North Carolina to the late William Grover and Lillie Barnett Clark. Her family moved to Woodfin and she graduated from Woodfin High School. On May 23, 1948 she wed Harold Redman Young “Roonie”, the love of her life, who died on September 3, 2017 after 69 years of marriage. The young couple resided in Detroit, Michigan for several years before returning to Asheville to live in the neighborhood of Kenilworth. Dot was a mother and happy homemaker with four children. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church for over 20 years. In 1974 the family moved to the Ox Creek Community in Weaverville and joined the Beech Presbyterian Church. She also became involved with local schools as a volunteer and later a substitute teacher. In 1983 and again in 1987 she received Governor’s Awards for distinguished volunteer service. She was a popular and dependable substitute teacher for over 15 years, mainly at North Buncombe High School and enjoyed every moment of her work! She was known for her cooking and often shared delicious baked goods with family, friends and co-workers at NBHS. She enjoyed hiking with her grandchildren and more recently doting on great grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling with the family. Her adventures included visits to mountains, beaches, the southwest deserts and an Alaskan cruise. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn C. Kuykendall and husband Bill; brother, W.G. “Doug” Clark; and sons-in-law, Dr. Sheldon B. Clark and R. Marshall Fields. Surviving are her daughters, Fern C. Bray and husband Tony of Hustonville, Kentucky, Deborah Fields of Weaverville and Pamela Hughes and husband John of Fletcher; son, Matthew B. Young and Kimberly Fyfe of Prescott Valley, Arizona; grandsons, Graham Redman Fields and wife Leslie of Fletcher and Clark Andrew Fields and wife Amanda of Weaverville; great grandchildren, Alexander Redman Fields and Ellie Addison Fields; sisters, Diane C. Martinez and Barbara C. Matthews both of Asheville; sister-in-law, Emily Clark of Asheville; brother, James Thomas Clark and wife Wanda of Marshall; along with several nieces and nephews. She was a dutiful daughter, faithful wife, devoted Mother, caring Nana, loving Grandnana and friend to all – she never met a stranger! Dot and Roonie spent the last two years at Fletcher Park Inn, enjoying senior living in Hendersonville. A memorial service to celebrate Dot’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2017 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home. The family will greet friends following the service. Private burial will be in Green Hills Cemetery. Flowers are welcome.
