Doris Sorrells

WEAVERVILLE – Doris Priscilla Sorrells, age 98, of Weaverville, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023.

Doris was born on July 24, 1925, in Buncombe County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Sorrells, Sr. and Margaret Davidson Sorrells. She is also preceded in death by her twin sister, Dorothy Sorrells Joyner (and husband, Joe Joyner); and brothers, Benjamin “Franklin” Sorrells Jr., and John A. Sorrells (and wife, Billie Sorrells).

She had no children of her own but was very loving and active in the lives of her nieces and nephews. She also taught generations of children during her many years as a Sunday school teacher at Weaverville United Methodist Church where she was a lifelong member. Doris was a devout Christian and prayer warrior who graduated from Columbia Bible College in 1950 with plans to become a missionary. However, after the death of her father she felt compelled to stay home with her family.  She worked at the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville for over 36 years.

Doris would never hesitate to put her life on hold to help her family or friends in whatever they needed. She would often be seen walking the sidewalks in Weaverville. She would say she thought she might be inspiring others to walk as well. She loved her home on Church Street and took great enjoyment in keeping her yard mowed and leaf free in the fall.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Doris is survived by special family member, Ann Joyner; nieces and nephews, Ben Joyner (and wife, Anna Joyner), Alan Joyner (and wife, Mary Nesbitt), and Suzanne Fortune (and husband, Chris Fortune); great nieces and nephews, Lacy Joyner (and partner, Kat Hundertmark), Ben L. Joyner, Christina Joyner (and partner, Dustin Gunther), Andrea Joyner Mills (and husband, Andy Mills), Aaron Fortune (and wife, Katrina Fortune), and Anna Fortune Malone (and husband, Will Malone); great-great nieces and nephews, Kaysen Buchanan, Louis Hundertmark, Axel Joyner, Ezra Mills, Gabe Mills, Mia Malone, and Zoe Fortune.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2023, in West Memorial Park, officiated by Reverend Richard Blount.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Weaverville United Methodist Church, PO Box 37, Weaverville, NC 28787.
