WEAVERVILLE – D. Welmon Roberts, age 84, passed peacefully from this life into eternal life with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 4, 2025. A native of Buncombe County, he was born on September 6, 1941, to the late Dennis Venard and Mildred Garrison Roberts.
He was a proud graduate of North Buncombe High School. Following graduation, Welmon began his lifelong career with American Enka, where he dedicated over 30 years of faithful service before retiring.
Welmon was a devoted member of Locust Grove Baptist Church in Weaverville, where he faithfully taught Sunday School for 64 years and served as a Deacon for 59 years. His deep faith and commitment to his church community touched countless lives throughout the years.
He and his beloved, Nancy, were truly inseparable – when you saw one, you saw the other. Their deep and enduring love was an inspiration to all who knew them and will never be forgotten by Nancy or by the many friends and members of the community who witnessed their beautiful bond.
They were both devoted Tar Heel fans – though Welmon might have been just a little more enthusiastic. He was absolutely crazy about his Tar Heels, faithfully attending nearly every home game for more than 25 years. Together, he and Nancy were proud members of the Rams Club, cheering on their team with unwavering loyalty.
Another great love they shared was traveling together. They carefully kept notes of every journey and recorded each mile they traveled. Over the years, they had the joy of visiting all 50 states – some more than once, and a few two or even three times – creating a lifetime of memories side by side.
In 1965, Welmon ordered a new 1966 Chevelle, which he treasured and still has to this day. He loved attending car shows throughout the years, and his Chevelle remained one of his greatest sources of pride and joy.
He is survived by the love of his life, Nancy Crawford Roberts, to whom he was married to for 61 wonderful years; his beloved daughter, Sabrina Hamlin Briggs and her husband, Richard; and his cherished grandsons, Hunter Briggs and his wife, Bailey, and Chase Briggs, who brought him endless pride and joy. He is also survived by his cousin, Judy Roberts, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Serving as pallbearers are Richard Briggs, Hunter Briggs, Chase Briggs, Johnny Grindstaff, Keith Kiser and Clyde Ramsey. Each of these individuals held a very special place in Welmon’s heart and was loved dearly.
The family will receive from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at West Funeral Home. The funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Locust Grove Baptist Church, 305 Locust Grove Road, Weaverville. Reverend Brent Snyder and Reverend Walter Ponder will officiate. Following the service, burial will take place in the church cemetery, with Welmon’s beloved Chevelle, driven by his grandson, Hunter Briggs, leading the hearse to his final resting place – a fitting tribute to a life well lived and deeply loved.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Loretta Rice and Joyce Duyck for their kindness and devoted care. Appreciation is also given to Madison Manor Rehabilitation Center for their support.
Flowers are welcome, or donations in Welmon’s honor may be made to Locust Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
