Carolyn W. Nordland

FAIRVIEW– Carolyn Watson Nordland, age 90, of Fairview, North Carolina, died Friday, November 12, 2021, at Flesher’s of Fairview.

Carolyn was born March 7, 1931, in Boston, Massachusetts to Ernest Alfred Watson and Bertha Elliott Watson. She was a resident of Buncombe County since 1988.

In addition to being a devoted mother and talented homemaker, Carolyn was an avid gardener, seamstress, knitter and hiker.  With her good nature and light-heartedness, she always had a smile for everyone, and was the kind of person who never met a stranger.  Throughout her life, she lived Christ’s admonition of Matthew 9:41, bringing her gift of hospitality, comfort, homemade soup and bread wherever it was needed, particularly among the church, the elderly, and the sick.   Carolyn and her husband Bill hosted youth groups in their home for years, with Bill leading bible studies often until 2AM, while Carolyn made everyone feel at home with her bottomless coffee pot, apple crumb pie (famous throughout northern New Jersey) and chocolate chip cookies.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 66 years, William A. Nordland, and grandson, Josh Nordland.

Surviving are her daughter, Deborah Kania and husband Richard of Fairview; sons, Mark Nordland and wife Sherry of Cody, Wyoming, and Daniel Nordland and wife Terry of Pinehurst, North Carolina.  Carolyn was intensely devoted to her grandchildren, praying for all of them throughout each day: Rick Kania (Katrina), Kathryn Kania Gaulin (Brian), Dan Nordland (Kerry), Melissa Nordland Ike (Jason), JoAnna Nordland, and Thomas Nordland (Tiffany).  She also leaves 8 great grandchildren: Natalia, Ethan, Emma, Will, J.D., Shyloh, Dalton and Wyatt.

Carolyn also held a very special place in her heart for her niece Joanie Kort (Jackie), Raymond Watson (Ruth) and Ernest Watson (Christine), all of whom were like second children to her.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30pm, Saturday, November 20, 2021, in Lewis Memorial Park, Asheville, with Daniel Judson officiating.
