Obituary

WEAVERVILLE - Betty Lou Roberts, age 88, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2026. She was born April 19,1938, in Buncombe County.

She graduated from Valley Springs in 1956 where she was a member of the women’s Buncombe County championship basketball team. She then attended Wake Forest University and graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

Betty taught and worked in the Buncombe County School System for 8 years before taking on an administrative role assisting her husband with Roberts Auto Sales and raising her three boys.

Betty had many wonderful friends with whom she enjoyed spending time. She taught Sunday school classes at Locust Grove Baptist Church for more than 40 years. From the ladies friendship class, she developed lifelong friendships with ladies she loved dearly and talked to daily. She enjoyed bowling in a league for 55 years and was still bowling up until her passing. In her later years she met a group of special new friends (her walking buddies) whom she walked and talked with daily. Betty was an avid sports fan. She loved working puzzles, gardening, bird watching, and she was an amazing cook. The most special thing about Betty is that she poured her heart into whatever she was doing and whomever she was doing it with. She made everyone feel special.

Betty was predeceased by her lifelong love and husband of 61 years, Orva Lee Roberts; her mother, Evangeline Baldwin Hollifield; and her father, Bentley Elijah Hollifield.

She is survived by her three sons, Rusty (Lisa) of Mooresville, NC, Dean (Becky) of Asheville, NC, and Robin (Kem) of Weaverville, NC. She was a loving and devoted grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by five grandchildren, Austin, Madison (Nate), Peyton, Camron, Josh and two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Forrest.

Betty is survived by her sister, Sue Kindley (widow of Bill Kindley), sister, Judy Roberts (widow of Ralph Roberts), and brother, Sonny Hollifield (Karen), plus many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
