Michael "Mike" Whitson

Michael “Mike” Whitson, age 75, of Weaverville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 1, 2022.

Mike was born on June 19, 1946, to Fern Miller Whitson and the late Clayton Whitson. He grew up in Yancey County, and was a resident of Buncombe County most of his life.  In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Whitson.

Mike was the co-owner of Tri City Plaza Barber Shop for 54 years.  It could be said that Mike had two well paying jobs: telling people about his love of the Lord, and on the side, cutting hair!  He made the most of his opportunity to be a witness in all his interactions.

Mike was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church and a longtime Deacon.  Previously, for many years, he and his family attended First Baptist Church of Weaverville, where Mike served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher.  He enjoyed deer hunting, watching his grandsons grow up and attending all of their sporting events.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Geraldine Whitson; daughters, Alicia Shelton (Tim) and Hannah Gosnell (Garland); mother, Fern Whitson; sisters, Angie Byrd (Tony) and Mista Whitson (Joe); grandchildren, Tyler Shelton, and Boone and Corey Gosnell; nephew, Lyle Byrd; niece, Lydia Singer; and too many close friends to list.  Mike loved to laugh and tell jokes. We will miss his sense of humor.

A private family memorial service is being held with Reverend Stan Welch officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Mike’s honor to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation at www.jdrf.org.
