Avon Shipman

ALEXANDER—Avon Shipman, age 91, of Lower Flat Creek Road died Sunday, September 8, 2013.

Mr. Shipman was born January 11, 1922, in Morrow County, Ohio, and was a resident of Buncombe County, moving from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in 1984. He was a retired US Navy veteran serving during World War II and Korea. Following his Navy retirement, he worked as a deckhand on the harbor boats in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and was a faithful and dedicated member of Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Albert and Minnie Clark Shipman.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Margaret Brundage Shipman, as well as nieces and nephews.

His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Sprouse officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 5483 Mars Hill Memorial Team.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville.
